BWF Golf Day at Northamptonshire County Golf Club

BWF Golf Day at Northamptonshire County Golf Club

Northampton is not only boots and shoes it is also home to one of the finest golf courses in the UK the sumptuous Northamptonshire County Golf Club in the village of Church Brampton deep in the heart of the English countryside. This was the setting for the annual Bob Willis Fund Golf Day raising funds for prostate cancer research and having a lot of fun at the same time.

On a perfect sunny Spring morning all eighty eight golfers received a warm welcome from Captain Gary Hoffman and Chair Martin Jaffrey. Soon laden down with hats, clubs, goody bags and heaps of ambition and optimism they set out across the wide acres and open fairways for the shotgun start at noon.

At the par three fifteenth hole Club Professional Adam Myers lay in wait with an invitation to “Beat the Pro” and, remarkably, six of the eighty eight actually did- one or two using their recently purchased Mulligan cards but all in a very good cause.

Golf continued throughout the day with refreshment taken regularly and many sporting stars were spotted demonstrating their prowess- old county colleagues of Bob Willis from Warwickshire Gladstone Small and Tim Munton were clearly visible as was local lad Allan Lamb and the new county cricket coach Darren Lehmann hot foot from Down Under picking the considerable brains of England’s new cricketing supremo Rob Key- a single figure handicapper who always enjoys a stiff golfing challenge.

Following the day’s play and suitably dressed for dinner, prizes were awarded to Ken Heathcote’s winning team with Keith Davies coming a close second. The incomparable auctioneer Charlie Ross skilfully teased money from the guests and entertained the audience who all agreed that it had been a most enjoyable day.
